Website affiliates are what drive Internet marketing. Companies run affiliate programs to generate leads and sales from other Websites. They pay the sites who host their ads a commission for products sold through the links on their sites. For example, if a site owner signs up for Amazon's affiliate program, he will receive ad banners or links from Amazon that he can place anywhere on his site. Then, if a visitor clicks on the Amazon banner or a link on his site and buys something, he will receive a commission. I have seen a few sites displaying evil ads because of such affiliates programs. One cannot display ads on one's website if there is any chance that an ad may be immodest, vain or immoral. Unfortunately for Website owners, affiliate commisions are seldom above 5%, since most Web sales are made with small profit margins.

The introduction of Website affiliate programs in the late 1990s brought Internet marketing to a new level. The first companies that offered these programs saw sales increase dramatically. After all, these companies basically get free advertising and only pay their affiliates a percentage of the sales they generate. It is a win-win situation for the company that runs the affiliate program. The only drawback is that the programs take a lot of work (and sometimes a lot of money) to set up and maintain. Thus, smaller companies may not find it very beneficial to offer an affiliate program.

Affiliate business contexts

The term affiliate has two general definitions in business contexts:

In corporate law and taxes, an affiliate is a company that is related to another company, usually by being in the position of a member or a subordinate role. Two companies may be affiliated if one company has control over the other or if both are controlled by a third company.

One corporation can be affiliated with another corporation by shareholdings, by holding a minority interest, or one corporation might be a subsidiary of another.

In online retailing, one company may affiliate with another to sell products or services. The seller has a website, on which affiliates may sell products. The seller has control over the site and pays a commission to affiliates. This relationship is sometimes called "affiliate marketing."

Affiliate commerce

1. Commerce: Two parties are affiliates if either party has the power to control the other, or a third party controls or has the power to control the both. Affiliation also exists in (1) in interlocking directorates or ownership, (2) in identity of interests among members of a family and, (3) where employees, equipment, and/or facilities, are shared. Affiliates are subject to greater than normal legal prohibitions and requirements to guard against insider trading. See also subsidiary.

2. Electronic commerce: Firm which sells other merchants' products at its own website. Visitors to the firm's website may order merchandise from there, but the sale is transacted actually at the principal's site who passes on a commission to the website from where the order originated.

1. A company in which another company has a minority interest.

2. More generally, a company which is related to another company in some way.

Affiliate examples:

Amazon, for example, has affiliates called "Amazon Associates." The Associates sell on Amazon's web site, and Amazon takes a percentage of the sale price for its fee.

An affiliate is an organization, business entity or individual that is related to and often controlled by a third party. This control may extend to shared management or ownership, common use of facilities and equipment, or access to other resources like fulfillment or customer service.
